Micro-credentials are official recognitions of specialized skills and knowledge acquired through professional experience, study, or practical application. By completing specific short courses or validating prior learning, these credentials provide a concise and effective way to highlight and affirm professional expertise and achievements.

At UNIMAS, lecturers have the opportunity to create micro-credential courses either from accredited academic programs or as unique standalone courses. Participants will receive a Micro-Credential Certificate along with a Digital Badge as a modern and compact way to acknowledge professional accomplishments.

MQA Definition of a Micro-Credential

A digital certification that verifies assessed knowledge, skills, and competencies in a specific or specialized area of study and practice.

Types of Micro-Credentials

There are two types of Micro-Credentials that can be implemented in UNIMAS:

1. Micro-Credentials from Unbundling of MQA Accredited Programmes

These courses are derived from existing accredited programs offered by UNIMAS and must maintain:
  • The same module structure
  • The same title as the original course
  • The same or equivalent assessments
  • The same credit value as the accredited program

2. Stand-Alone Micro-Credentials

These independent courses are designed to address specific industry or learner needs, offering:
  • Flexible content tailored to the target group
  • Full design autonomy for course developers, including control over course format, teaching methods, assessment types, and learning resources
  • Creative and modern teaching strategies that enhance engagement while maintaining alignment with learning objectives and outcomes.
  • No formal credits assigned, but learning hours are clearly stated (a minimum of 1 credit hour is recommended)

What is Digital Badge?

A Digital Badge is a secure, digital certification that visually represents an individual’s acquired knowledge, skills, achievements, competencies, and proficiency. It serves as a modern way to recognize and verify learning outcomes, making it easier to showcase and evaluate expertise.

Learners who successfully complete Micro-Credential courses receive Digital Badges from UNIMAS, as a credible and verifiable record of achievement. These badges can be shared on professional platforms such as LinkedIn, resumes, or e-portfolios to highlight their skills.
